Chevy ads making fun of F-150's tailgate step backfire?

The AutoObserver at has a lenghty piece on Full Size trucks and one aspect that caught my eye was a bit about Chevy running ads saying Ford's new tailgate step was un-manly? I haven't seen this ad, but it's apparently having the oposite effect?
I guess that old saying "people in glass houses.." is true. Why point out a new feature on a competitor's revised truck? And what's so un-manly about it? I'm not a tall guy, if I was buying a full size truck, this is the type of feature may be an advantage to me.
